Jewellery Care

Shiny jewellery is the best, right? So, let's care for it!

Any metal will eventually tarnish. This is due to the oxygen in the air reacting with the metal. But there are ways to bring your jewellery back to its original shine!

With every order, you receive a polishing pad that you can use to clean your jewellery. Here is one 1 inch by 1 inch pad depicted with some rings

With every order, I provide a little polishing pad. Clean jewellery after use with a soft cloth. Whenever you feel like it, bring it to shine with this polishing pad. It can be reused many times and is not a one-use-only product!

Don’t use on purposely non-shiny parts, though, as you might rub off the unique patina.

Once nice and shiny, here are a few essential tips to keep it this way for longer:

Keep away from water (take off before showering, bath, swimming)

Avoid direct contact with perfumes, lotions, creams and other chemicals

Take jewellery off before going to bed

Remove jewellery before working up a sweat (anything from cleaning to heavy weights)

OTHER METHODS

BRASSO AND COTTON
OR TOOTHBRUSH

Another easy method is good old Brasso. Take some Brasso and rub your jewellery with it, then grab a cotton cloth and polish until it's shiny - super easy, super quick!

Brasso and a cotton cloth make for a good method to clean jewellery

VINEGAR AND OTHER
HOUSEHOLD METHODS

Salt and Vinegar are part of some jewellery care methods using household staples

Vinegar is a natural pickle, we know that from onions and cucumbers. It also works for cleaning jewellery. Leave your jewellery in vinegar over night and with a soft toothbrush, clean it in the morning.

There are methods that use baking powder. These methods are quite harsh and I would not recommend them personally.

Vinegar, salt and tinfoil react, too. It's all about the magic chemistry, and a thing you can do for heavily tarnished silver (and only silver). Best to not let it come to that, though!

A gentle method to treat your jewellery is just warm (not boiling) water, some dish soap and a very soft toothbrush (don't use a hard one, or toothpaste for that matter). This will gently rub off any tarnish and leave you with a lovely shine.

HELP! MY SKIN IS TURNING GREEN!

What is the green residue?

The green colour on your skin from certain jewellery happens when metals like copper (which is part of most metals and not just brass, even 925 Sterling Silver) react with the acids in your skin, creating a greenish substance. It's harmless and washes off easily.

byMaraca offers mainly jewellery made from brass due to its beautiful golden colour and affordability compared to actual gold.

How can I avoid it?

The easiest way to avoid a discolouration of your skin whilst still wearing your beautiful jewellery is clear nail varnish. It is long-lasting and cheap. Just apply a thin coat to where the metal touches the skin to prevent the copper reacting with the acids. Reapply as often as necessary.
